The explosion of Christmas light installations across the country in recent years has filled Instagram feeds but they can be demanding on tightening budgets at a time of year where families are overwhelmed with pulls on their resources.

The brief

We were asked to devise a free to access Christmas lights event that would provide that same festive magic for families who live in an area classed as having both low social mobility and low cultural engagement.

The Delivery

The 11th century castle in Newark is a scheduled ancient monument that stands in the centre of the town and is held in great affection by the local population. Working around previously scheduled renovation works, we developed an installation that combined ground level lighting, projection and music. Launch night alone saw approaching 1,500 people in attendance.

Within the run period, we also hosted a Christmas fun day with singing, walkabout characters, reindeer and craft activities.
